BEDFORD – A Bedford woman was arrested on a warrant after a Bedford Police officer responded to 5th and H streets after a report of an accident with possible injuries on May 16, 2022.

Amber Kast, 34, Bedford, was arrested at 11:19 a.m. on October 1 on a warrant for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, neglect of a dependent operating a vehicle while never licensed, and possession of marijuana.

When police arrived all of the occupants were out of their vehicle.

Police spoke to the driver of a red 2015 Dodge SUV, William Lewis. Lewis was traveling east on 5th Street and was hit on the driver’s side of his vehicle. Lewis told police his vehicle was impacted so hard that it rolled over twice before coming to a rest on the south side of the road.

Beth Lewis who was a passenger in the 2015 Dodge SUV told police that the driver of the silver vehicle hit them coming south on H Street as they were traveling east on 5th Street.

Beth Lewis complained of chest pains.

Amber Kast

The other driver, 34-year-old Amber Kast, of Bedford, was traveling south on H Street. She told police she looked both ways and entered her lane of travel and did not see the red Dodge SUV.

Kast had her two-year-old daughter in the back seat secured in a car seat.

Police say they detected the odor of marijuana from Kast’s vehicle.

Kast told police she had been smoking marijuana earlier in the day and pulled out a glass jar from her pocket that contained marijuana.

Police say Kast had glassy eyes, lethargic speech, and unsteady balance.

Kast refused to submit to a certified chemical test. Police then learned Kast did not have a valid driver’s license.

A search warrant was issued by Judge Nathan Nikirk and Kast was transported to IU Bedford Health Hospital for a blood draw.

The child was released to a family member and Kast’s vehicle was towed by Mikels Wrecker Service.
