Obituary: Martha Jane Dumond

September 12, 1950 – September 29, 2023

Martha Jane Dumond, 73, of Williams, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2023, at the I.U. Health Hospice House in Bloomington. Born September 12, 1950, she was the daughter of Raymond Dumond and Mary Frances (Tolbert) Dumond.

Martha Jane was a graduate of Mitchell High School class of 1968 and had a Technical Certificate from Ivy Tech. She worked at M. Fine and Sons as well as Cook, Inc. and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Although Martha Jane never married or had children of her own, she took a key role in raising her
younger siblings after the death of their mother. The family was everything to her. While looking at family photo albums a friend once commented that when Jane was in a picture, she always had a child on her lap. For her youngest siblings, she was a second mother, and for other youngsters, she was “Mother
Martha”.

Even though she was unable in the last few years to tend to a flower garden, she appreciated the color and beauty of them very much. Her favorite activities were playing games and cards with family and friends.

Surviving to cherish the memory of Martha Jane are her three sisters, Mary Dumond, Patricia “Pat” Kidwell and Susan Dumond; three brothers, Randy Dumond, Roger (Cheryl) DuMond and Steve (Beth) Dumond; two nephews, Alan DuMond and Jason Cooper; two nieces, Nichole (Scott) Schoettmer and Leslie Jackson; one great nephew, Paul Schoettmer; two great nieces, Clair and Kate Schoettmer; and her aunt, Carolyn Sue (Roy) Waggoner.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Lennie Dumond.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford with Bud Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Port Williams Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, October 2, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Andy McKnight, Jason, Scott Schoettmer, Paul Schoettmer, Alan DuMond, Donnie Miller and Randy Bex.
