Alert citizen helps to nab Walmart thief

BEDFORD – A Hardinsburg man was arrested after Bedford Police officers were alerted to a theft at Walmart.

Stephen Davis

When police arrived the accused 38-year-old Stephen Davis had gotten into a maroon Chevrolet Cruise and left the parking lot.

The caller told police he was following the vehicle and it had pulled into Steak N’ Shake then exited and was traveling south on James Avenue and turned into a parking lot near Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Officers stopped Davis. He had a female passenger in the vehicle.

The caller told police he was shopping in Walmart when he noticed Davis acting suspiciously and he had a lot of merchandise. He told police he thought Davis was acting paranoid and maybe under the influence of drugs.

The caller said when he was at the self-checkout and saw Davis rapidly pushing his shopping cart out of the store. The caller followed Davis and observed him loading the stolen merchandise into a vehicle. His female passenger got out of the vehicle and helped Davis load the items into the Chevrolet Cruise. Once finished they both got into the vehicle and left. That is when the caller dialed 911 reported the incident and began following Davis.

Police say Davis denied stealing the items and had paid for them with his debit card. But he was unable to provide police with a receipt. He then admitted he had only stolen the toilet paper because it was so expensive. But then finally admitted he had stolen the other items. Inside the trunk police found numerous unbagged items including frozen foods.

Police reviewed the store’s security video that showed Davis pushing a cart full of merchandise out of the store without paying for it.

The total amount of items stolen was $983.30.

Davis was detained on a charge of theft over $700 and his female passenger was released from the scene.
