Phi Beta Psi celebrates 75 years at the Persimmon Festival

LAWRENCE CO. – The Beta Zeta chapter of Phi Beta Psi is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping cancer patients in the Mitchell area, and this year marks the 87th birthday of their chapter, and the 75th anniversary of their food booth at the Persimmon Festival every year.

The sorority’s presence at the Persimmon Festival is the only fundraiser they hold each year, and the money made at their food stand goes to help cancer patients throughout the year.

Phi Beta Psi reliably gives out five to six thousand dollars each year to help those with cancer. Aid includes gas cards for travel to Indianapolis treatments, or gift cards to buy groceries for those who have to take off work for cancer related reasons, as well as other means.

At meetings, Phi Beta Psi bring forward affected members of the community and address their situation on a contextual basis.

“It’s hard work, but we love it” Tracy Winkler said, “it is so rewarding.” The team is exhausted by the end of festival week, but Tracy enjoys the time spent with members of the sorority that they don’t get at the meetings.

“It’s an honor to be part of this tradition and serving in the community,”
