Tip of drug activity lands Bedford man behind bars

BEDFORD – Daniel Evans, 35, of Bedford, was arrested on drug charges Friday, September 15 after a Bedford Police officer stopped his vehicle at State Road 50 East and Tunnelton Road after receiving a tip that Evans was dealing drugs.

The officer began following Evans’ vehicle after he pulled into the Circle K gas station at the intersection of 16th and H streets.

The officer said Evan was in the station “for an abnormal period of time and after exiting the
station, the officer observed him rummaging through the vehicle”.

The officer said Evan entered the vehicle and sat in the parking lot for an “extended period of time” before finally driving out of the parking lot.

Evans then pulled into the Walmart parking lot. He stopped in the middle of the driving lane for an extended period of time. Evans eventually pulled into a parking space.

Evan continued to sit inside the vehicle “once again for an abnormal amount of time”. He then exited the vehicle and entered the store. He exited a short time later and traveled west on John Williams Boulevard and then north on State Road 37.

Evans was clocked traveling 64 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone.

The officer activated his emergency lights to stop Evans’ vehicle at State Road 37 at the Oolitic stoplight but the officer reported it took Evans an extended amount of time to come to a stop.

After the vehicle stopped, the officer approached the vehicle and explained why he stopped Evans. He was smoking a cigarette and said he had been on the phone with his girlfriend. Then he told the officer he was at Walmart picking up baby formula. Evans then admitted he was speeding and that he had recently put new tires on the vehicle and “they might be off a little”. The officer said Evans “appeared to have a slightly nervous tone in his voice”.

Evans said he was going to his brother’s house but the officer noticed Evans had his GPS activated for a home on State Road 37 and he felt that was odd.

Evans was requested to exit his vehicle and he was issued a written warning for speeding.

The officer then asked for consent to search the vehicle and Evans denied that request.

Oolitic Marshall James Harrington and canine Deny Joe arrived on the scene. Canine Deny Joe alerted officers to possible drugs in the vehicle.

During a search, police found a baggy of 15 grams of crystal meth in the glove box.

Evans was arrested on charges of possession of meth.

Mikels Towing and Recovery LLC towed Evans’ vehicle.
