IU student injured in scooter accident

BLOOMINGTON – An IU student was seriously injured after colliding with a vehicle at the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and 10th Street on Thursday, September 14.

Witnesses said the scooter rider was turning left across two lanes of traffic before colliding with a vehicle.

Indiana University Police are investigating the accident that happened at 11:17 a.m.

According to IU Public Safety Communications Manager Mary Keck, the student was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

This is the first major accident involving an e-scooter this year. Last fall, there were two fatal accidents involving scooters.

An 18-year-old IU freshman died on August 17, 2022, after he crashed while riding an e-scooter on 10th Street west of Eagleson Avenue, across from the Wells Library.  The student had suffered a head injury and later passed away at an Indianapolis hospital.

A hit-and-run accident claimed the life of 20-year-old IU student Nate Stratton on Saturday, September 18, 2022, at 1:50 a.m. Bloomington Police officers responded to the intersection of North Walnut and 12th streets after a report of an accident with injuries.

Criminal charges were filed against 22-year-old Madelyn Howard. She is facing charges of reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident causing death when operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
