Red Devils conquer shorthanded Stars 2-1

BEDFORD – Jeffersonville ended Bedford North Lawrence’s modest three-game winning streak with a 2-1 triumph during boys high school soccer action on Saturday.

The Red Devils scored the first two goals, then held off BNL’s late charge. Elijah Cheeks converted a corner kick with a header for the first score at 4:21 of the first half, and Kevin Solorzano Lopez found the net off a breakaway at 30:47 for a key insurance goal in the second half.

BNL (5-5-1 overall, 1-3-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference), got on the board with 17:54 left. Adriano Sullivan drew a foul on Jeff goalie Alex Juarez Lira on a breakaway, and Grant Beyers knocked home the penalty kick.

Jeffersonville (5-5-0, 2-2-0) owned as 19-5 advantage on shots as the shorthanded Stars (with goalie Daniel Loudin-Magnuson and three other starters out of action) withstood most of that pressure.

“I’m really proud of how the remaining starters and bench guys stepped up and competed,” BNL coach Ryan Otis said. “We were really thin and the guys fought the whole game. Parker Beeson did well in goal filling in for Dan. You could see his confidence build during the game. He will continue to get better with more experience. We need to get healthy and continue to build depth.”

The Stars will host Martinsville on Wednesday. The scheduled match at Eastern Greene on Monday has been cancelled.
