Salem sweeps singles to stop Stars

BNL’s Drew Stephenson helped the Stars record a win at No.1 doubles against Salem.

SALEM – Salem swept the singles while clipping Bedford North Lawrence 3-2 during boys high school tennis action on Thursday.

The Stars (6-11) were dominant in doubles, but the Lions dropped only 11 games in the three singles matches.

“We had the advantage in doubles and their strength was in singles,” BNL coach Chris Kurtz said. “We had some chances, just not enough to pull out a win on any of those upper courts. Four matches in four nights took its toll.”

In doubles, BNL’s Drew Stephenson and Neal Patel pounced on Japeth Webb and Griffin Richards 6-1, 6-3 at No.1, while Gavin Baker and Jackson Corey combined to stop Landon Irwin and Hunter Tranior 6-1, 6-3 at No.2.

Salem’s Cameron Albertson swept past Jayden Kemp 6-1, 6-0 at No.1 singles, Carson Albertson defeated Orion Hill 6-3, 6-4 at No.2, and Nick Ingram topped Isaac Bridges 6-2, 6-1 at No.3.

The Stars will host Jennings County in the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament, and celebrate Senior Night, on Monday.
