Pursuit ends with an arrest and recovery of a stolen vehicle

BLOOMFIELD – A I-69 northbound pursuit, Tuesday, at approximately 10:15 a.m., resulted in the arrest of an Evansville man on a variety of charges.

Master Trooper John Yung was stopped on the right shoulder of I-69, north of the 89-mile marker, with his rear red/blue emergency lights activated when a blue 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Trey B. Bedwell, 35, of Evansville, failed to slow down and move over for a stationary emergency vehicle.

While using a VASCAR speed-timing device to track the Cobalt’s speed for more than a mile, Yung determined Bedwell’s vehicle speed exceeded 99 miles per hour.

Yung attempted to initiate a traffic stop for the violation of failure to reduce speed for a stationary emergency vehicle when the pursuit was initiated at approximately the 93-mile marker. Yung pursued the Chevrolet Cobalt north on I-69 with speeds ranging from 100-105 miles per hour.

Troopers from the Jasper and Bloomington districts assisted and attempted to de-escalate the pursuit with the deployment of stop sticks at various locations along I-69 northbound.

Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department deployed stop sticks at the 114-mile marker and Bedwell’s Cobalt came to a stop on I-69 north of the SR37 interchange after striking them.

Bedwell was apprehended without incident and transported to the Greene County Jail where his custody was transferred. He was arrested for the following charges:

  • Resisting Law Enforcement in a Vehicle, a Level 6 Felony
  • Driving While Suspended Prior, a Class A Misdemeanor
  • Reckless Driving, a Class C Misdemeanor

Continued investigation revealed the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier was reported stolen from Chandler, Indiana. The vehicle owner was unaware the Cavalier had been stolen until after Bedwell was incarcerated.

A vehicle theft report was filed with the Chandler Police Department and Yung was notified. Bedwell was additionally charged with:

  • Theft of a Vehicle, a Level 6 Felony
