Report of suspicious man lands him in jail on drug charges

BEDFORD – On Thursday, August 31, at 7:30 p.m. Bedford Police responded to a call reporting a suspicious male on a black moped at 1805 O Street.

The caller reported the male had what appeared to be multiple baggies of a white substance.

Mark Carothers

When police arrived on the scene they located 34-year-old Mark Carothers parked between two apartment buildings and rummaging through a compartment area of a black moped.

As an officer approached, Carothers slammed shut the compartment.

The officer spoke to Carothers. He told the officer he was at the apartment to see a friend. He was then asked if he was in possession of anything illegal. Carothers denied a request to search the moped.

Canine Flex was then requested to the scene and the dog alerted officers to drugs in the moped. In the moped compartment, police found 20 syringes, a cut straw, and an electronic scale both with meth residue.

Police then ran the vehicle identification number on the moped and discovered it had been reported stolen.

Carothers denied the moped being stolen and said he had bought it from a female named Kaci Prewitt.

Carothers was then detained on charges of auto theft, possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a syringe, and possession of drug paraphernalia and transported to jail.

The moped was towed by Stone City Service & Collision Center.
