ISP investigating police-involved shooting

MARION – The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Marion Police Department, is investigating a police-involved shooting in Marion, where a man died.

The preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police detectives revealed that Saturday, at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers from the Marion Police Department responded to the area of 7th and Boots streets on a report of gunshots being fired.

The officers received information on the description of the suspect. No one was injured in that incident.

A short time later, a Marion Police officer found a male matching the description, who was later identified as Casey J. Barlow, 29, Marion, holding a handgun. The officer attempted to make contact with Barlow, and he fled on foot.

Marion Police Officers pursued Barlow on foot near the area of Branson and 6th Streets where officers gave loud verbal commands for Barlow to drop the gun and Barlow complied.

Commands were given in an attempt to place Barlow into custody. Those commands were ignored, leading to an officer utilizing a Taser against Barlow. During the Taser deployment, Barlow produced a second handgun and pointed it in the direction of the officers. Barlow was shot, at least once, by officers of the Marion Police Department.

Officers provided life-saving measures at the scene. Barlow was transported by ambulance to Marion Health, where he was later pronounced deceased. Notification to the family of Barlow has been made.

There were no officers injured in the incident. The Marion Police Officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. This is standard operating procedure for the Marion Police Department when an officer is involved in a shooting.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.

Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be provided to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
