Hard-hitting Panthers push past Stars

BNL’s Kendlyn Alvey had 16 digs during a three-set loss at Jennings County on Thursday.

NORTH VERNON – Jennings County survived a second-set challenge while sweeping past Bedford North Lawrence during high school volleyball action on Thursday night.

The Panthers (2-2 in the Hoosier Hills Conference) posted a 25-14, 27-25, 25-17 victory. The Stars (3-5) dropped their fourth straight match and their league opener.

“Jennings is one of the toughest teams in our conference,” BNL coach Whitney Carroll said. “Their coach (Toby Harrell) is a great guy and has worked hard to build that program these last few years, and it shows. Tonight was such a great experience for our girls. We have some young kids in some big roles and they’re settling in and doing a great job. I was proud of our effort tonight.”

Camryn Anderson paced the Stars with 10 kills, Sammie Gratzer added 5 kills, and Kendlyn Alvey totaled 16 digs.

“Kendlyn had 16 digs. but what the stats don’t convey is how hard their team hit the ball,” Carroll said. “Each dig was earned tonight. Camryn did an incredible job at the net. She had 10 kills but so many of those shots were really smart, heads-up plays finding the floor. We’re making a lot of smart plays and getting better every day.

“Trinidy (Bailey) is an unsung hero many days. She has such great court awareness and hustle. She is a quiet leader and set a great game today. Both Sammie and Camryn had the tough job of blocking their senior right side (Charlee Barlow), who is a beast. They have a roster full of tough hitters. Jennings will go far.”

BNL will visit White River Valley on Monday.
