MCS board approves MOU with Lawrence County Sheriff for a School Resource Officer

MITCHELL – The Mitchell Community School board approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Lawrence County Sheriff for a School Resource Officer (SRO) to replace Rob German after his resignation.

The board approved the position, and will now work on reviewing potential candidates, hoping to have a selection ready in time for the September meeting.

The officer chosen is required to have the same training qualifications as officers in the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

The officer will serve only during the school year as opposed to year-round. The chosen candidate will be expected to build relationships with students, be present at events and in the halls, and serve in a preventative position.

The SRO will have a special Deputy Status through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office but will be employed by the school corporation.

The arrangement is similar to the agreement between the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and Springville Academy, and once decided on, the chosen candidate will be sworn in by Sheriff Greg Day.
