South tennis sweeps to 5-0 win over BNL

BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington South dropped only four games while rolling to a 5-0 win over Bedford North Lawrence during boys high school tennis action on Tuesday.

The Panthers cruised through singles as David Ciucu stopped Jayden Kemp 6-0, 6-0 at No.1, Alex Busch bopped Orion Hill 6-0, 6-0 at No.2, and Austin Spier defeated Braxton Fugate 6-1, 6-1 at No.3.

In doubles, South’s Josh Sang and Abe Corry topped Drew Stephenson and Neal Patel 6-0, 6-1 at No.1. Ethan Peyton and William Liao took care of Gavin Baker and Jackson Corey 6-0, 6-1 at No.2.

“It was a lopsided victory, no doubt about that,” BNL coach Chris Kurtz said. “But I’m not disappointed or upset with how the guys played, in any way. They showed great heart and competitiveness. It’s actually some of the best tennis we’ve played. You get better by playing great teams, and that’s our takeaway tonight.

“Isaac (Bridges) has been out since Saturday, still recovering from illness, so some newer players have stepped in for us – Micah (Carter) last night in doubles, and Braxton tonight in singles. I’m really excited for both of them to get this experience. They have tremendous work ethic and will play key roles on this team for several years to come.”

The Stars will host the Rob Spencer Invitational on Friday.
