Shooting claims the life of a Salem man

SALEM – A Salem man was shot during a confrontation Monday at a home on South Organ Springs Road.

According to Indiana State Police detectives, at approximately 6:32 p.m. on Monday, August 7, 2023, Washington County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call regarding a shooting at 7783 South Organ Springs Road in Salem. 

Washington County Sheriff’s Department responded and found Michael T. Chastain had been shot in the front yard of that address. 

According to Master Trooper Detective Travis Baker, Chastain showed up at that address and drove through the front yard.  He ultimately exited his vehicle and grabbed the homeowner and forced him to the ground. 

Chastain then pulled a weapon and pointed it at the homeowner’s head.  The homeowner’s wife noticed this from inside the residence.  She then grabbed her handgun and exited the house and ultimately shot Chastain. 

Chastain was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital in Salem where he later died from his injuries.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be turned over to the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
