Mitchell man dies in an accident on Meridian Road

MITCHELL – A Mitchell man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Friday on Meridian Road.

On Friday, July 28th, at approximately 4:54 p.m., officers from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash on Meridian Road, south of Yockey Road.

According to a press release, 24-year-old George Troxel was traveling south in a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Meridian Road attempting to navigate a curve. The Jeep traveled off the right side of the roadway.

As the Jeep re-entered the road, Troxel lost control of the vehicle which began to slide. The Jeep slid across Meridian Road, striking a group of rocks on the east side of the roadway. The impact caused the Jeep to roll onto the passenger side, with the roof impacting a tree.

Unfortunately, Troxel did not survive the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say excessive speed is believed to have contributed to the crash.

Per state law, toxicology testing has been completed and those results are pending.

The crash was investigated by Officer Kinsley Duncan, with assistance from Officer Chris Griggs and Sgt. Michael Wiliams.

A complete reconstruction is being completed by Indiana State Police crash reconstructionist John Yung.

Agencies assisting the Sheriff’s Department include Marion Township Fire Department, Bedford Fire Extrication, IU Health Ambulance, and the Indiana State Police.Â
