Green County EMA: tips for staying healthy in the heat

INDIANA – “The dangerous heat continues to plague the US. Again, we encourage our senior citizens to
minimize exposure to the heat and not go outside.” Said Roger Axe, Director of Greene County
Emergency Management.

“People think they can go full tilt in this heat without consequences. You must pace yourself and
adjust accordingly. This is a marathon not a sprint. Here are some more tips for dealing with the
heat.

If you must get out the earlier in the day the better because that is the coolest part of the day.
Wear light colored clothing and wear a hat or keep your head covered to protect yourself. If you
must travel have head protection like a hat or bandana in case of vehicle breakdown.

Refrain from wearing jewelry. Just as metal conducts cold in the winter it conducts heat in the
summer. Jewelry in this weather can make you hotter.
Light meals such salads are better than heavy proteins as proteins make the body throw off more
heat.

Avoid idling your vehicle as it only increases the heat in-engine and can cause your vehicle to
overheat.” Axe said.
