Brown County man found guilty of murdering his neighbor

BROWN COUNTY — A Brown County was found guilty of murder after he shot and killed another man in September 2021 over a dispute about a mailbox.

Brown County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the 4500 block of South Helms Road near Belmont. Upon arrival, they found a man in a house and engaged in an hour-long standoff. That man was identified as 56-year-old Randy Small. He eventually surrendered.

About a mile from the house, police found Bob Adair dead in a vehicle. Investigators believed Adair was killed a few days before officers arrested Small.

According to court records, Small told his brothers during a phone call that he shot Adair at about 2 p.m. on the afternoon of Sept. 15, 2021, over a property dispute involving the location of a mailbox.

Small’s sentencing is set for August 28.
