Paoli man injured in accident on Stumphole Bridge Road

MITCHELL – A Paoli man was injured after he crashed his car in the 1000 block of Stumphole Bridge Road on Sunday, July 16.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the crash at 3:40 a.m. 

According to police, 22-year-old Michael Nichols, of Paoli, was driving a 2017 Ford Focus east on Stumphole Bridge Road when the car left the roadway, rolled onto its top, and caught fire in the engine bay.

Nichols told police he had been drinking earlier that night. He was unable to complete field sobriety tests due to his injuries. 

Nichols suffered minor bleeding and complained of pain in his knee and lower leg and foot. He was treated at the scene by an IU LifeLine ambulance crew and then transported to IU Health Hospital and consented to a blood draw.

The impact caused major damage to the vehicle. Damages were estimated between $5,001 to $10,000. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Mikels Towing and Recovery.
