Canine Dusty alerts officers to five grams of meth in the vehicle

NEEDMORE – On Wednesday, June 28th, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement Section concluded an investigation into drug activity involving that was found to involve 38-year-old Douglas Harlan, of Bedford.

Officers had received tips relating to Harlan’s involvement in dealing meth.

Around 3:00 p.m., Harlan was observed by ISP DES Detective Caleb Garvin and Lawrence County Sheriff Greg Day driving a vehicle north on State Road 37. Harlan was observed committing multiple traffic violations, including speeding and failing to signal a lane change.

Sheriff Day conducted a traffic stop on Trogden Lane, just off State Road 37.

During the traffic stop, Lawrence County Officer Joshua Rhoades and Capt. Andrew Phillips arrived to assist. Officer Rhoades deployed his canine, Dusty, who gave a positive alert of possible drugs in the vehicle. During the subsequent search, Harlan was found to be in possession of digital scales with methamphetamine residue on them, as well as approximately nine grams of meth.

Harlan was arrested on charges of dealing meth, and possession of meth between five and 10 grams and incarcerated at the Lawrence County Jail.
