Man sentenced to prison for OWI convictions

BEDFORD – Lawrence County Circuit Court II Judge Bob Cline sentenced 38-year-old Caleb Godsey to 6.5 years to the Indiana Department of Corrections Monday.

On May 8, 2022, Godsey was arrested by Bedford Police Major Dannt Irwin on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Over the last 20 years, Godsey has been convicted of multiple prior convictions of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The previous convictions enabled Prosecutor Samuel Arp to file a habitual vehicle substance offender enhancement which carries an additional sentence of one to eight years.

On May 1, 2023, Godsey agreed to plead guilty but was mentally ill in a negotiated plea deal. He was then released to a treatment facility that aids individuals in overcoming mental health and addiction issues pending his sentencing hearing.

Godsey was released from treatment, however, on June 7, 2023, Godsey was once again arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after an Indiana State Police Trooper stopped him at 10:45 p.m. after a report of a possible intoxicated driver at SandPit and Palestine roads.

“The sentence that was handed down from Judge Cline allows Mr. Godsey to get mental health and alcohol addiction treatment,” said Prosecutor Arp. “Godsey was a danger to himself and the community at large. My office places great focus on impaired drivers and always looks for solutions that will address the individual’s addiction problems and keep our community safe. In this case, Godsey eliminated every option provided to him, which ultimately led to his commitment to the Indiana Department of Corrections.”
