National Weather Service confirms tornadoes hit Monroe, Martin, and Johnson Counties

INDIANA – The National Weather Service has now confirmed three tornadoes from Sunday, June 25th. One in Johnson County, one in southwest Monroe County, and one in Martin County.

Details on the path and rating will be coming later today or tonight as damage survey teams continue to work. Crews will also work to see if there were any additional tornadoes.

One man is dead after a tornado destroyed a home he shared with his wife on Windom Road, south of Shoals.

Martin County Emergency Management confirmed the man’s death. First responders found the woman in the rubble of her home. She was air-lifted from the scene. Neither person has been identified.

Melisa Sorrells, communications commander for the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said crews had to cut their way through the debris and bypass multiple powerlines that were downed to reach those in need.

One other home in Rutherford Township was destroyed, and several trees and powerlines are down in Martin County.

Monroe County

According to Monroe Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Jason Allen, the storm made a wide path down Rockport, Rockeast, Carmichael, Lee Phillips, and Snow roads.

The tornado left a trail of destruction damaging buildings, outbuildings, vehicles, and trees.

No injuries were reported.

Monroe County EMA Director Jamie Neibel assisted the fire territory’s survey efforts to determine the total number of homes that have been damaged during the storms. They found several trees that were down on roadways and downed power lines across streets.

An estimated 10 structures have reportedly been damaged, according to county officials. This includes primarily homes and barns.

Firefighters from all seven Monroe Fire Protection District stations were involved in assisting with the aftermath of the storm.

Besides the tornado and winds, residents reported finding golf ball-sized to apple-sized hail in the county.

Daviess County

Cleanup will continue in northern Daviess County. That’s where there were reports of downed trees and powerlines. US 231 north of Farler had to be shut down while crews cleared storm damage.

Daviess County Central Dispatch said no one was hurt.
