Monroe County Correctional Officer injured during an unprovoked attack

BLOOMINGTON – A Monroe County Sheriff’s jailer is recovering after being struck in the head by a man wielding a thermos.

Sgt. Brahaunm was on duty at the Monroe County Correctional Center and was outside of the facility conducting an exterior check on the building on Saturday, at 11:36 a.m. At the same time, the Bloomington Community Farmers Market, the National Lemonade stand day, and a large art fair were going on during this time with many pedestrians in the area of 7th Street and College Avenue.

Sgt. Brahuam then noticed 33-year-old Christopher Head. The officer was familiar with the male and asked him “What’s up Chris”. That is when Head struck Sgt. Brahuam with a thermos leaving a large bleeding laceration on the back of the officer’s head.

While injured, Sgt. Brahuam was able to detain Head.

He was arrested on a charge of battery on a public safety officer, a Level 5 felony.

Sgt. Brahuam was transported to a local hospital and received seven staples. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say Head was accused of terrorizing citizens along the B-Line trail and the city. Bloomington Police Department officers were involved in an active investigation into Head’s alleged crimes.

“We wish him a speedy recovery,” said Monroe County Sheriff Ruben Marté. “Without Sgt. Brahaum‘s willingness to fight through his injury to serve and protect it is unknown what Mr. Heads’ next action would have been. We also thank the Bloomington City Police Department for their prompt response and action.”
