Monroe County Democratic Party to hold Caucus for Bloomington Council District 6 Nominee

BLOOMINGTON – The Monroe County Democratic Party will hold a ballot vacancy caucus for the Democratic nominee for Bloomington Common Council District 6 on June 30, 2023, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Bloomington City Hall, at 401 North Morton Street.

When a candidate or nominee withdraws from the ballot prior to the July deadline, under Indiana Code, the filling of the ballot vacancy falls on that person’s political party. For District 6, those eligible precinct committeepersons or their proxy may cast a vote for a new nominee at a party caucus.

The party has until July 3, 2023, at noon to file its nominee with the County Board of Elections for the fall ballot.

The ballot vacancy caucus will be a public event.

The MCDP will hold a public candidate forum beginning at 5:45 p.m. Eligible voters will have until 6:45 p.m. to cast their ballots.

The MCDP will announce the results at the conclusion of the caucus.

Eligible candidates residing in District 6 may seek the nomination of the party. To qualify for the caucus, candidates must file the appropriate paperwork with the Board of Elections and the MCDP Chair 72 hours prior to the caucus, which is Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

“We have one more vote for this primary to go,” said David G. Henry, MCDP Chair. “Filling ballot vacancies, while rare, is a well-established practice under Indiana Code. Voters will still get an opportunity to cast a ballot for the District 6 nominee starting in October with early voting. As we look ahead to the fall, I am happy that at the end of this caucus, we will have a full slate of Democrats for our community to consider for the next term.”
