Combative patient resists officers and is arrested

HELTONVILLE – A Bloomington man was arrested after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a report of a domestic fight on Thursday, June 8 at 1:14 p.m. at Transition’s Recovery Center on Diamond Road in Heltonville

A male employee reported he was involved in a physical dispute with a patient.

When officers arrived they were met at the front door by the caller who had suffered a bleeding injury above his lip.

The employee reported that 45-year-old Herschel Sparks, of Bloomington, had attacked him.

Herschel refused to speak to the officer and walked away from him. The officer stopped Sparks and attempted to place him in handcuffs. Sparks reacted by yelling and pulling away from the officer. He was told to calm down but Sparks began slinging his arms in a forward motion to prevent the officer from handcuffing him. The officer then took Sparks to the ground and handcuffed him.

Sparks refused to tell the officer what happened. An ambulance was requested to the scene to medically evaluate Sparks, once cleared he was arrested on charges of battery and resisting law enforcement.

The employee told police, Sparks had been dropped off by a friend and became aggressive with the receptionist, and refused to listen. He said he stepped in to calm Sparks down. Sparks then began to yell and punched the employee numerous times in the face and then kicked him numerous times in the left leg. The employee signed in a battery affidavit.
