BNL’s Staggs, Corbin finish with 76s in regional

MONTGOMERY – Bedford North Lawrence’s Colton Staggs and Houston Corbin concluded their 2023 golf seasons, and their careers, during the IHSAA regional at Country Oaks on Thursday.

Both graduated seniors fired strong rounds of 4-over 76, but did not qualify for the state championship at Prairie View on June 13-14. The top three teams in the field of 15, plus the top two individuals who are not members of qualifying teams, advanced to the final stage of the state tournament series.

Corbin posted his second straight career-best round while carding one birdie (the par-5 sixth) and a field-best 13 pars. He had one double-bogey when he air-mailed the second green. Staggs posted birdies on the sixth, 13th and 18th holes.

Evansville North won the team title, setting a state record with its seventh consecutive crown, with a sizzling score of 292. Bloomington South was second at 296, while Evansville Memorial was third at 302.

South’s Happy Gilmore was the medalist with a 2-under 70. Bloomington North’s Jacob Knapp and Jasper’s Luke Shappard claimed the two individual qualifying spots (a change in the qualifying protocol this season) with 1-under 71s.
