Man charged with attempted murder after shooting his brother and nephew during a long-term family dispute

COLUMBUS — Robbie Perez who is accused of shooting his 3-year-old nephew and his brother in Hope on Thursday, June 1 is facing charges of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery, according to a joint press release from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and the county prosecutor’s office.

Perez, 35, of Homer, is being held without bond. He is still being treated at Eskenazi Hospital for a self-inflicted gunshot to his chin. A Bartholomew County corrections officer is stationed at the hospital while he is there recovering, said Sheriff Chris Lane.

Sheriff deputies were called to the 300 block of Elm Street in Hope at 11:25 p.m. on Thursday, June 1 after receiving a report of a shooting.

When police arrived they found 36-year-old George Perez Jr., 36, who lives at the residence, and his 3-year-old son Kingston, had suffered gunshot wounds. Both were transported by medical helicopter to Indianapolis area hospitals.

According to Sheriff Lane, a family dispute lead up to the shooting after a long-term feud between the two brothers.

George Perez Jr. was treated and released, however, Kingston remains hospitalized in critical, but stable condition at Riley Hospital for Children.

According to police, Robbie Perez went to the home and stood on the porch, firing shots inside the home and hitting George Perez Jr and the child.

At 10:49 a.m. on Friday, June 2, deputies were told that Robbie Perez’s silver Chevrolet HHR was sent traveling west on East King Street near I-65 in Johnson County. Franklin Police Department officer located the vehicle and attempted to stop it.

A vehicle pursuit ensued during which Robbie Perez was taken into custody. Police found Robbie Perez was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to Eskenazi Hospital for treatment. The vehicle was processed by crime scene technicians and they found a firearm inside the vehicle.
