Oolitic Town Council votes to allow enforcement of burn bans

OOLITIC – The Oolitic Town Council voted during a special session on Thursday to update the town’s ordinances, allowing for the issuance of burn bans.

Burn bans can now be issued in Oolitic by the chief of the Oolitic Volunteer Fire Department, the acting chief at the time or a designee of the chief, as well as through a vote by the council.

When a burn ban is called, the town will notify residents through social media, local news and phone notifications. Once a ban is in place, no fires of any kind will be allowed, with no exceptions.

The ordinance also allows for penalties to be enforced if someone is found to be in violation of the burn ban, including a $300 fine if fire equipment must be used to extinguish the flames.
