Trooper stops a speeding vehicle and arrests a homicide suspect

DELAWARE CO. – Wednesday afternoon, a trooper from the Indiana State Police Pendleton District stopped a vehicle for a speeding infraction and discovered the driver was wanted out of Alabama for homicide.

On March 31, 2023, just before 4:00 pm, Trooper Corey Bell was patrolling State Road 35 near Mt. Pleasant after receiving citizen complaints about vehicles driving too fast in the area. While checking the speed of vehicles, Trooper Bell determined a red Ford Focus was traveling above the posted speed limit.  A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and the driver was identified as Teddy Donnell Cozart, 20, of Andalusia, Alabama.  During the course of the traffic stop, it was discovered that Cozart was wanted on an active warrant out of Alabama for homicide.

According to Andalusia Police Department in Alabama, the warrant stemmed from an alleged incident that took place in October 2022, in which a man was shot and killed while driving away from an apartment complex.

Teddy Donnell Cozart was arrested and transported to the Delaware County Jail where he will await extradition back to Alabama.

Indiana State Police Detectives are currently assisting investigators from Andalusia Police Department with this investigation.  This investigation is still ongoing.

Any further inquiries into the incident that happened in Alabama should be directed to the Covington County District Attorney’s Office at 1-334-222-2513.

Assisting Trooper Bell in this investigation were troopers and investigators from the Indiana State Police Pendleton District and members of the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office.
