Teenage boy dead, 20-year-old behind bars

EDINBURGH – A teenage boy is dead and a 20-year-old is behind bars in the Johnson County Jail for allegedly shooting him Saturday night in Edinburgh.

According to the Edinburgh Police Department, 20-year-old Pedro Castillo-Salmeron was arrested on a charge of reckless homicide shortly after the incident occurred.

Police responded to the 600 block of South Pleasant Street Saturday night where they found a 14-year-old boy with a gunshot to his chest.

The boy was taken to Riley Hospital for Children where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have identified the victim as Jonathon Elliott, of Greenwood.

Witnesses told police Castillo-Salmeron had left the scene. Police later apprehended him without incident. a short time later.

Police say that there is no known motive for the shooting and they are still investigating.
