Mungle fans 13 as Stars muzzle Bulldogs

BNL’s Cade Mungle struck out 13 during a 3-0 win at New Albany.

NEW ALBANY – Cade Mungle authored a complete-game masterpiece as Bedford North Lawrence silenced New Albany 3-0 during high school baseball action on Monday evening.

Mungle scattered three hits and struck out a career-high 13 as the Stars (12-5) posted an impressive road victory. Mungle allowed only two runners to reach scoring position.

“Cade pitched really well,” BNL coach Jeff Callahan said. “When you strike out 13, you don’t have to make a lot of plays.

“He’s just around the zone and all his pitches were working. He’s not going to blow it by you, but you don’t know what movement it will have and what speed it’s coming in there. He had it rolling.”

BNL scored twice in the third inning. Walker Ward led off with a single to right, Nate Pemberton dropped a sacrifice bunt, and Cal Gates launched a RBI double to left. With two out, Kline Woodward rifled a single to right to chase Gates home.

In the fifth, the Stars added a huge insurance run when Pemberton bombed a solo home run (the first of his career) to right.

“It was a nice surprise,” Callahan said. “When it left the bat, it was no doubt. It was a towering shot.”

Gates and Woodward had two hits each for the Stars. Landon Tiesing had a double for the Bulldogs (6-10).

BNL (continuing a seven-game road trip) will visit Bloomington North on Tuesday.
