Mitchell Youth First going green on Monday for Mental Health Awareness Month

MITCHELL – On Monday, May 1, members of the Mitchell Youth First advocate group will be wearing green in support of Mental Health Awareness Month and ask others to show their support as well.

Youth First is a youth serving organization that embeds Master Level Social Workers within schools across 13 counties in Indiana. They provide mental health professionals and parent support, free
of charge, without the constraints of insurance.

In the spring of 2022, Mitchell Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Brent Comer began having conversations with staff, who suggested Youth First services assist in the district’s facilities. By the Fall of 2022, Melinda Johnson, LCSW, began working with all four of Mitchell’s schools.

As of March 2023, Johnson had 50 students on her 1:1 caseload that she has seen through 339 sessions, intervened in 4 crisis situations, participated in 112 parent consultations, 309 teacher consultations, and participated in 150 immediate need situations.
