ISP detectives investigating stabbing at New Castle correctional facility

NEW CASTLE – Detectives from the Indiana State Police Pendleton District were requested to conduct an investigation into a stabbing that occurred at the New Castle Correctional Facility leaving two individuals with non-life threating injuries.

On April 28, 2023, at approximately 9:40 a.m., a female mental health counselor at the New Castle Correctional Facility was conducting a group session involving eight male offenders.  At some point in the session, one of the offenders, for an unknown reason, allegedly displayed a pointed metal object and began stabbing the female counselor in the area of her neck and throat.  During the attack, several of the other offenders attempted to intervene.  One offender was stabbed in the chest while attempting to stop the attack.

The female mental health employee, as well as the other inmate, were both transported to Indiana University Ball Hospital in Muncie with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Indiana State Police were asked to conduct the investigation and are being assisted by Investigators from the Indiana Department of Corrections, as well as GEO Group, the private company that runs the New Castle Correctional Facility.  Investigators are currently conducting interviews with witnesses and the suspect.   Once the case is complete, it will be submitted to the Henry County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
