Five vehicle crash on I-465 claims one life

INDIANAPOLIS – Saturday, at 7:58 p.m. Indiana State Police Dispatchers began receiving emergency calls about a multi-vehicle crash on I-465 northbound near the 38.9-mile marker, blocking the right three lanes.

When first responders arrived they found the driver of one car unresponsive and unconscious. Despite life-saving efforts, that driver was pronounced deceased on the scene. A driver and a passenger in another car were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists determined the driver of a passenger car was driving northbound on I-465 approaching a construction area where four northbound lanes split, the left lane becomes separated from the right three lanes by a concrete barrier wall. It appears the driver attempted to move from the right lane into the separated lane at the last second and struck the crash attenuator. After impacting the attenuator, the vehicle bounced back into the right three lanes collecting four other vehicles in the wreckage. The driver of the vehicle that struck the attenuator was pronounced deceased.

During the investigation, the right three lanes of I-465 northbound are closed, and the left lane remains open. Investigators expect to have all lanes reopened by 11 p.m.

This information is preliminary and subject to change based on the investigation.
