Bedford man arrested after borrowing a vehicle and failing to return it, police find him with drugs

MITCHELL – A Bedford man was arrested after a report of a possible stolen vehicle parked at the American Legion in Mitchell.

When police arrived on Saturday, April 8th at 3:21 p.m. they spoke to the owner of the vehicle who told police they allowed 38-year-old Thomas Burton to drive her vehicle to the store three days ago to go. Burton was to go to the store and straight back but failed to return.

She then located the vehicle parked behind the American Legion. The owner said Burton was driving the vehicle and there were two other males that exited the vehicle and they all walked to the rooming house across the street from the American Legion.

The owner wished to file criminal charges against Burton.

The officer then went to the rooming house in an attempt to find Burton. 

Burton answered the door and he was detained. Police say Burton had a plastic baggy containing crystal meth in his hand. He denied the drugs were his. But did admit he was in the process of purchasing it. He told the officer, that when he knocked on the door someone placed the drugs in his hand.

When asked about the vehicle, Burton said he had planned to return it to the owner and he admitted he had received numerous texts from the owner requesting him to return the vehicle but he never replied to those messages.

Burton was arrested on charges of possession of meth and criminal conversion.
