Bluejackets suffer 10-1 loss to Seymour after allowing eight-run sixth inning

MITCHELL – Things were going well for Mitchell High School early in their matchup against Seymour on Monday at Parker Field.

The Bluejackets scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third after a single from Caitlyn Mullis allowed Jayden Allen to cross home plate. Mitchell would go on to hold that 1-0 lead until the sixth inning, when things began to fall apart.

It began with the first at bat, when Kendall Allman singled off a pitch from Bluejackets’ starter Karsyn Coleman, who to that point had given up just three hits in the game against 17 batters faced.

After Allman reached first, the Owls began a string of bunts, four straight to be exact, that wound up with them taking a 3-1 lead before Mitchell had recorded their first out.

The Bluejackets began to climb out of the hole they’d dug, with no outs and runners now at first and second. Mitchell’s Avery Southern tagged out Seymour’s Abby Followell on an attempted steal of third, as Coleman struck out Owls’ hitter Avery Stewart.

Now, with two out and just a runner at second, the Bluejackets’ found themselves in a much more manageable position, but that wouldn’t last for long.

Back-to-back Seymour singles led to a fourth run in the inning before a walk loaded the bases for the Owls. At which point, Allman returned to the plate after singling to start the inning to crush a pitch from Coleman all they way past the center field fence for a grand slam.

Fortunately for the Bluejackets, those would be the last runs scored in the inning but the damage had already been done, as Mitchell now faced a 8-1 deficit with just two innings left to play, which turned out to be a difference they weren’t able to overcome.

Seymour would go on to score another two runs before the game’s end, taking the win 10-1.

Coleman’s pitching record on the season fell to 2-1 with the loss. She faced 29 batters in sixth innings at the mound before she was relieved by Southern in the seventh inning.

Coleman, Mullis, Malaya Tanglao and Rylee Brazzell each counted hits in the game for Mitchell.
