Car crash leads officers to find meth pipe in driver’s pocket

MITCHELL – A Mitchell man is facing drug charges after an incident on February 23, 2023.

Police arrested 51-year-old Scottie Crane, on a warrant on charges of possession of meth and drug paraphernalia.

According to a probable cause affidavit on that day, Mitchell Police Officer Michael Bargo responded to the intersection of State Road 37 and Main Street after a report of an accident with possible injuries.

When officers arrived they found a car in a ditch on the north side of Main Street. The vehicle was being driven by Crane. Police found him slumped over the steering wheel.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Lonnie Johnson arrived to assist at the scene.

Officers attempted to wake Crane but were unsuccessful. All four doors of the vehicle were locked and the handles were broken off. Officer Bargo used his baton and smashed the back passenger side window to gain entry. The officer was able to unlock the front passenger door and place the vehicle in park.

Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department firefighters arrived on the scene and freed Crane from the wreckage.

Fire personnel arrived on the scene. Mitchell Fire personnel were able to remove Crane from the vehicle.

Crane was disoriented and confused.

Assistant Fire Department Chief Wayne Coble located a meth pipe containing crystal meth in Crane’s pocket.

IU Health EMS personnel arrived on the scene and was transported to IU Health Hospital for treatment. Medical personnel did tell police that Crane’s blood sugar was low.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and a warrant was issued for Crane’s arrest.
