No fines were issued after the partial collapse of a Mitchell antique store

MITCHELL – The Mitchell City Council decided no fines will be issued to the owner of Fun Finds Antiques, Collectibles & More at 621 Main Street after a partial collapse of the building on December 7, 2022.

The incident forced an evacuation of the downtown area due to a gas leak.

According to Mayor Nathan Jenkins, the owner has the money to repair the building, and once the repairs are made the State Fire Marshall’s Office will inspect the work. He said adding a large fine would cause financial hardship for the owner.

Mitchell City Councilwoman Vicky Schlegel asked if an engineering study was conducted on the building. Mayor Jenkins replied there was not an engineering study conducted and added the owner is not interested in obtaining grant money to repair the building.

Repairs will begin on the building in the near future.
