Traffic stop leads to drug and drug paraphernalia found, two arrests made

BROWNSTOWN – Two people were arrested Sunday night after a Jackson County Sheriff’s Department deputy stopped the driver for an equipment violation at 600 North High Street.

The driver of the vehicle, 42-year-old Christopher Moffatt, of Brownstown, and his passenger 36-year-old Veronica Marin was arrested on charges of dealing and possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Moffatt is also facing a charge of being a habitual traffic violator for life.

According to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer, at 7 p.m. Sunday while Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Officer Alan Jones was on routine patrol in the Brownstown area he spotted an equipment violation on a white Chevrolet HHR and initiated a traffic stop.

While speaking with Moffatt, Deputy Jones detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

A probable cause search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of meth, marijuana, a meth pipe, rolling papers, and corner-cut bags. Sheriff Meyer reported officers seized 60.2 grams of meth and 14.51 grams of marijuana.

Marin admitted to Brownstown Police Department Officer Ryan Cherry, who was assisting at the scene, that she had meth hidden inside her body that she could retrieve.

Both were detained and transported to the Jackson County Jail.
