ISP investigating officer-involved shooting in Jeffersonville

JEFFERSONVILLE – Thursday, March 9, detectives with the Indiana State Police are investigating a police-involved shooting in Jeffersonville after Jeffersonville Police responded to a man-with-a-gun call.

A preliminary investigation by ISP detectives reveals that around 7 p.m. on Thursday, officers with the Jeffersonville Police Department responded to the apartment complex at 1501 E. 8th Street after receiving a 911 call about an allegedly mentally disturbed man walking around the parking area while armed with a handgun.

ISP detectives believe that shortly after Jeffersonville officers arrived and made contact with the man, he fired a pistol in the air and then pointed the gun toward the officers. As a result, at least one officer fired their department weapon, striking the subject. After officers provided lifesaving measures, the man was immediately taken to University Hospital in Louisville by ambulance. He is currently listed in Critical Condition.

No officers were injured, and officers from both departments checked to ensure no apartment residents were harmed.

ISP detectives are investigating at the request of Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh.

This is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
