Obituary: James (Jim) V. McDonald Sr.

October 4, 1961 – February 10, 2023

James (Jim) V. McDonald Sr., 61, of Oolitic, passed away on Friday, February 10, 2023, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital after a brief illness and with his children, whom he adored at his side.

Born October 4, 1961, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of Tim McDonald, II, and Alice (Hicks) Hartman. He had attended Bedford North Lawrence High School, Bedford Free Methodist Church, and Crossroads Community Church. Jim loved his family fiercely and worked hard as a single Dad for his eight kids at many jobs in food service, IU Transportation, and the Bombay Co.

He enjoyed traveling with his family to his hometown of Chicago to watch the Cubs. He loved playing cards and basketball. But most of all, his favorite thing to do was to be with his kids, grandkids, and extended family.

Survivors include his children, Angelique Floyd, and husband, Jay, James McDonald, Jr. and wife, McKenzie, Christopher McDonald, and wife, Kristen, Jeremy McDonald, and wife, Sabrina, Courtney McDonald and companion, Jamie Baker, Rebecca McDonald, and companion, Cody Compton, all of Bedford, Richard McDonald, of Marion, IN, and Micheal McDonald, who is serving with the U.S. Navy; grandchildren, Chloe and Brenston Floyd, Isabella and Dawson Baker, Brantley Compton, Gauge, Maylee, Finley, Mason, and Baby Boy McDonald expected to Chris and Kristen in April; step-grandchildren, Dallas and Paisley Compton; siblings, Tim (Melissa) McDonald, Teresa (Rob) Harris, Tammy (Karl) Max, Mary (Alan) Thomas, Lisa Wright (Brad May), all of Bedford, and April Hartman (Case Copeland), of New Mexico; his mother, Alice Hartman, of Oolitic; aunt, Meg Hicks, of Chicago, IL; uncles, Ken McDonald, of FL and Bob Hicks, of Bedford; close family supporter, Kim Deckard-Morris; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, his step-father, Jim Hartman; a brother, Micheal McDonald (in infancy) and a grandson, Ryden McDonald who was stillborn.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16th at the Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Dive Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15th at the Day & Carter Mortuary and on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service at the Free Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s memory to Free at Last Ministry, Latter Glory House, or Saul to Paul Ministries.
