Police arrest driver going wrong way on State Road 37 following pursuit

BEDFORD – A Gosport man was arrested Wednesday after Lawrence County Central dispatch received a 911 call of a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes of State Road 37, near Judah.

Lawrence County Sgt. Anthony Pope and Officer Kinsley Duncan located the vehicle near Avoca. It was still traveling south in the northbound lane, almost striking the officers head-on.

The officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver, 45-year-old Dwight Pepper, refused to stop. A short vehicle pursuit ensued.

Bedford Police Officers helped stop northbound traffic, south of the pursuit, to reduce the danger to the public.

Lawrence County and Bedford Officers were able to conduct a traffic stop north of 5th Street once the vehicle finally stopped.

Police said Pepper refused to comply with the officers’ verbal commands. He would not exit his vehicle, so officers had to forcibly remove him from the car with Pepper resisting the entire time, according to the officers.

Once removed, officers were able to secure Pepper in handcuffs.

Police said Pepper was intoxicated. They also found marijuana and opened alcoholic beverage containers in the vehicle.

Pepper was arrested on charges of resisting arrest in a vehicle, resisting arrest by force, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, and having an open container of an alcoholic beverage.
