Gabhart earns top seed in butterfly

JASPER – Bedford North Lawrence’s Emma Gabhart earned the top seed in the 100-yard butterfly during the IHSAA girls swimming sectional preliminaries at Jasper on Thursday.

Gabhart clocked 1:01.11 to take the top spot for the finals on Saturday. The winner in each event will automatically qualify for the state championships.

Gabhart, who expects to drop time when she shaves and dons the tech suit for the finals, is also seeded second in the 100 backstroke (1:02.28). BNL is seeded second in the 200 medley relay (2:00.71) and 400 freestyle relay (3:59.56), with Ava Lipp, Gabhart, Cookie King and Shelby Slaughter comprising both foursomes.

“It was a monster night for the ladies,” BNL coach Adam Young said. “Almost 100 percent season-best times. I couldn’t be more proud of the whole group. It’s rare to have such a good showing across the board.”

The sectional consolations and finals are set for 2 p.m.
