Brazzel and Kling advance to regionals for Mitchell High School

Mitchell’s Ezari Brazzel has his hand raised after a victory over Chase Ferguson

Mitchell High School wrestlers traveled to Southridge on Saturday to compete in this year’s sectional event.

Coming out of that event, two Bluejackets’ wrestlers, Ezari Brazzel (21-13) and Alex Kling (23-10) advanced to regionals, after placing in the top four of their respective weight classes.

Brazzel finished fourth at 113, pinning Chase Ferguson, of Southridge (9-19), fall at 0:50 and Patrell Childs, of Bedford North Lawrence (13-10), fall at 4:52, in consolation round matches.

He was beaten in both the quarterfinal round and third-place matchup by New Albany’s Thomas Nguyen, fall at 1:19 in their quarterfinal match and fall at 0:44 in their third-place bout.

Kling finished fourth at 285, defeating New Albany’s Joseph Athkin in the quarterfinal (3-8) pinning him after 0:39 after receiving a bye in the opening round. Kling also won a consolation round matchup against Zeke Valenciano from Southridge (9-19), pinning him after 0:50.

He was defeated by Jasper’s Evan Nordhoff in the semifinal round, with the pin coming at 3:59.

He fell in the third-place matchup to Pike Central competitor Hayden Goins (20-20), being pinned at 1:25.

Overall, Mitchell finished eighth at the event, scoring 39 points.
