Fight at Bloomington Walmart ends with man being arrested

BLOOMINGTON – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a fight in progress at Walmart on State Road 45 Monday night.

When officers arrived at 7:21 p.m. they found four to five people involved in a fight and one man bleeding from the face.

Upon arrival, deputies located the bleeding man, Matthew Wall, 29, of Bloomington, exiting the storefront. Deputies ordered him to stop and place his hands on a nearby vehicle. While Wall was being handcuffed, he attempted to flee on foot. Police pursued him and he continued to resist arrest.

As they were attempting to arrest Wall, deputies observed a magazine, belonging to a handgun fall from Wall’s clothing.

Later it was determined that Wall was in possession of a 9mm handgun, two magazines, and 28 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

Wall was transported to an area hospital for treatment for the injuries he obtained prior to the officer interaction. Deputies involved in taking Wall into custody received minor injuries to their hands from grappling on the asphalt.

It was reported by several witnesses and store officials that Wall and another unknown male, accompanied by two small children, engaged in a physical altercation inside the business. Deputies with the sheriff’s office, along with officers from Bloomington City Police Department, attempted to locate the second person involved, however, he left before police arrived at the scene.

Wall was transported to the Monroe County Correctional Center and remanded on the following charges possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, resisting arrest, criminal recklessness, and battery.
