Mitchell City Council discuss Duke Energy street lamp replacement program

MITCHELL – During their first meeting of 2023 on Jan. 10, members of the Mitchell City Council discussed the potential of a street lamp replacement program.

Working with Duke Energy, the program would see the city replace 338 lamps in Mitchell with LED alternatives, which are said to be more efficient.

In December, the city paid $3,480.15 for their monthly electric bill. After a potential switch, Mitchell Mayor Nathan Jenkins said the city would reduce their energy consumption charges to an estimated $1,215.05.

As part of the program, the city would pay a monthly equipment charge of$1,101.54, bringing their monthly savings to around $1,150. Jenkins was unsure of the length of time that Mitchell would need to make the monthly equipment payment at the time of Tuesday’s meeting.

Additionally, the city of Mitchell would receive a rebate from Duke after the completion of the project, totalling $10,905, according to Jenkins.

The project would likely take between three and four weeks to be completed.

No decision was made by the council regarding their participation in the program at the meeting.

In the meeting, the council also voted to elect their officers for the new year; Larry Caudell will serve as president, with George James as vice president.
