Preteen runs away and faces criminal charges after having violent meltdowns

BEDFORD – A preteen faces criminal charges following two incidents on Tuesday, December 27th.

The first incident happened at 2:10 p.m. when his mother had taken him to the Lawrence County Health Department on Mitchell Road to get the required school immunizations. The 12-year-old male had a “meltdown” in the office when he learned he was getting shots and left the building without permission. His mother requested that he be charged with being a runway.

The preteen was last seen walking west on 25th Street toward Washington Avenue. Police were unable to locate the preteen.

At approximately 4:24 p.m., the preteen’s mother located him and took him back to the police department. He was issued a summons to appear in court on a charge of runaway and released to his mother.

Later that day, at 5:30 p.m. officers were called to a home in the 309 block of N Street after a report the boy was “out of control”, tearing up his bedroom and hitting other members of the household.

The boy’s mother said he had pushed her in the chest and had punched two others who attempted to calm the boy down and stop him from harming their mother.

Police say there were not any visible injuries present on any of the three victims.

While attempting to handcuff the boy he pulled his arms away and fell to the floor displaying another “meltdown”.

Officers carefully placed him in handcuffs and escorted him to a patrol car.

The boy was charged with three counts of domestic battery and resisting arrest and was released to his grandmother on a promise to appear in juvenile court on January 4th at 9 a.m.
