Old man winter is about to land – safety tips

GREENE CO. – Old man winter is about to land on us with both feet, says Greene County Emergency Management Director Roger Axe.

“It will be just in time for Christmas,” Axe added. “Weather predictions are extreme cold with possible wind and snow.”

Here are some things to remember.

  • Make sure you have a gas line anti-freeze in your car to keep the fuel line from freezing up
  • and your vehicle not starting.
  • If you have exposed water pipes, leave a trickle of water running in a sink. Running water will not freeze.
  • Make sure your cell phone is charged.
  • If you must travel start with a full tank of gasoline. Stay on the main roads if possible, and avoid back road shortcuts. Call ahead and find out road conditions at your destination.
  • Carry a blanket, extra socks and a towel if your feet get wet, and a little food.
  • If you get stuck in the snow, make sure your vehicle’s tailpipe is clear of snow. Run your engine and heater for 10 minutes every hour to conserve fuel. When you run your engine roll your window down a crack to vent to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Make sure you have plenty of food, fuel, medication, and supplies at your home. Play it safe so you will be here for 2023.
