LAWRENCE CO. – A several-month-long investigation by the Indiana State Police Bloomington District A.C.E.S. (Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Section) has concluded with the arrest of numerous suspects.
On April 7, 2022, Trooper Chance Humphrey was contacted by the owners of Lawrence County Farm Supply, who were reporting their business had been burglarized. The business had sustained a large amount of damage, and several tools and a large amount of cash had been stolen. Sergeant Greg Day, Troopers Caleb Garvin, and Zack Robbins responded to the scene to assist Trp. Humphrey. They immediately began an investigation to include the processing of the scene by Sergeant Eric Russell, Crime Scene Investigator assigned to the Indiana State Police Laboratory.
Not only did the Troopers identify potential suspects, but they also learned that for the past few months there had been several thefts and burglaries in the city of Mitchell. The CSX Railroad building had been burglarized multiple times and there had been previous smaller-scale thefts at the feed mill and other victims were also identified.
For the next five months, Troopers followed up on tips, interviewed numerous people, collected various pieces of evidence, and executed three separate search warrants that resulted in the recovery of several stolen items. Eventually, the investigating Troopers compiled enough evidence to establish probable cause for the arrest of eight suspects on several felony and misdemeanor offenses. The investigation was reviewed by the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office and submitted to Lawrence Superior Courts I and II, and the Honorable Judges John M. Plummer III and Robert Cline issued arrest warrants for the suspects.
On Monday, December 19, 2022, Troopers with the members of the Mitchell Police Department, and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department coordinated an effort to locate and arrest the suspects. This effort led to the arrests and charges of the following:
Clayton McKinney, 21, of Bedford
- Two counts of Burglary, a Level 5 Felony
- Three counts of Theft, a Level 6 Felony
- One count of Criminal Mischief, a Class A Misdemeanor
Nikki Gammon, 37, of Mitchell
- One count of Theft, a Level 6 Felony
- One count of Theft, a Class A Misdemeanor
Robert Riley, 23, of Mitchell
- Two counts of Burglary, a Level 5 Felony
- Two counts of Theft, a Level 6 Felony
- One count of Theft, a Class A Misdemeanor
Samantha Lindsey, 21, of Mitchell
- One count of Theft, a Class A Misdemeanor
Nicholas Dunn, 40, of Mitchell
- Two counts of Burglary, a Level 5 Felony
- Three counts of Theft, a Level 6 Felony
- One count of Theft, a Class A Misdemeanor
Caleb Riley, 21, of Mitchell
- Two counts of Burglary, a Level 5 Felony
- Two counts of Theft, a Level 6 Felony
- Two counts of Theft, a Class A Misdemeanor
Christopher Davis, 40, of Mitchell
- One count of Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, a Level 4 Felony
- Three counts of Theft, a Level 6 Felony
This remains an open investigation and further arrests may occur.
Nicholas Dunn and Caleb Riley are currently housed within the Indiana Department of Corrections and have been served their charges. Christopher Davis is currently being held in the Vigo County Jail for unrelated charges and has also been served his charges.
During this extensive investigation, Troopers were assisted by the Mitchell Police Department, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, and the CSX Railroad Police.
