Rep. May and Rep. Bartels to serve on key House committees

STATEHOUSE – State Reps. Chris May (R-Bedford) and Stephen Bartels (R-Eckerty) recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members’ two-year terms. May received an appointment to serve as chair of the House Local Government Committee and as a member of the House Natural Resources Committee.

Rep. Chris May

“Committees are where a lot of the heavy lifting occurs as far as crafting and evaluating legislation,” May said. “I look forward to diving into issues that matter to Hoosiers and ensuring the voices in our district are heard at the Statehouse.”

Bartels received an appointment to serve as vice chair of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, and as a member of the House Public Policy Committee, and the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. He was also reappointed as an Assistant Majority Whip, a House Republican leadership position.

Rep. Stephen Bartels

“Increasing public safety, supporting law enforcement, and reducing inefficiencies in government are always among my top priorities. I also look forward to exploring ways we can improve our criminal justice system, which is being negatively impacted by the growing rates of addiction and mental health issues,” Bartels said. “As a veteran, I will also continue our efforts to help Hoosier service members with a successful transition from active duty to civilian life.”

House lawmakers are scheduled to convene for a session at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and sessions.
